Welcome to Chenier Farms! We have owned and operated our 40 acre family farm in Opelousas, Louisiana for nearly 30 years. We began growing food as a young married couple in order to take ownership of our health and make ends meet. Farming is in our blood, having been raised in South Louisiana families that depended on raising their own food using local wisdom and resources. When we started to see the need in our community for locally grown, healthy produce, our passion for farming quickly transformed into a business as we and our three sons began selling produce at nearby markets in the 90's. After all these years, we still work the land ourselves, relying on natural and sustainable methods to raise a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and animal products. We are excited to share our passion for good food with you!
-John and Betty Chenier
When you watch a seed sprout from the ground, it's clear to see that life is a miracle. We believe that the land is a gift from God, and that if taken care of and nurtured, will abundantly provide all of the nourishment we need. We use sustainable methods, focused on bio-diversity, crop rotations, organic solutions to pests and weeds, and natural fertilizers from the animals and nutrients that already exist on our land.
We believe that good health starts with eating right and prioritizing locally grown, fresh produce in our diets. Our hope is that those who encounter Chenier Farms would be inspired to take ownership of their wellbeing, starting with the foods they eat every day. We love sharing this passion with our customers and growing an abundant variety of produce for a diverse array of cultures. We have been so blessed by those who buy our produce, sharing their lives with us and introducing us to so many new and wonderful fruits and vegetables.
We grow and sell a wide variety of seasonal produce. In the fall, winter and spring this includes, kale, collards, arugula, broccoli, beets, turnips, brussel sprouts, swiss chard, bok choy, spinach, fennel, sweet potatoes, and strawberries. As the weather warms in the summer, we grow okra, tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupe, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, corn, squash, and more. Additionally, we sell fresh eggs and raw unfiltered honey throughout the year. We've also been known to hold a few Boucheries over the years!
You can find us most Saturdays at the Red Stick Farmer's Market in Baton Rouge from 8am-12pm. Visit www.breada.org for up to date information on the market.
